Storage Tips
- If possible, fill your boxes to capacity. Partly filled boxes may tip or collapse
- Heavy items should be packed into small boxes, making them easier to lift. Especially if you are moving books and records.
- Use labels or number any boxes for easy reference should you need to locate your goods. It’s a good idea to make an inventory and keep it in a safe place at home.
- Protect your fragile goods in bubble wrap or tissue paper, especially dishes or glasses.
- All garden equipment should be cleaned prior to storage.
- Wardrobe boxes enable you to store safely your clothing using hangers to keep their shape.
- Place heavy or bulky items in the room first to provide a good stacking base.
- Plan your storage space. Put items that you may need to access most often toward the front of the unit, nearest the door.
- To maximise your space, stack similar sized boxes together.
- Do not place heavy items on top of sofas or mattresses.
- Always place a protective cover over any soft furnishings.
- Stack chairs seat to seat, with cloth or paper between them.
- Leave refrigerator or freezer doors open to enable ventilation.
- Pictures and mirrors should be should be wrapped, marked fragile and stacked on their end.
- Cover your goods with sheets to protect against dust.
- For maximum security it is advisable to padlock your unit.
For health, safety and hygiene reasons the following CANNOT be stored:
Food or perishable goods.
Birds, fish, animals or any other living creatures, plants.
Combustible or flammable liquids, solvents, solvent based paints or cleaning materials.
Explosives, weapons or ammunition.
Radioactive materials, biological agents, toxic waste, asbestos or any materials of a dangerous nature.
Any illegal substance or goods illegally obtained.
